Ukraine FM Requests a Meeting with Russia Within 48 Hours

By: Ahmed Fathi

Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba asked Russia and all participating states to hold a meeting within the next 48 hours to discuss Moscow’s military buildup along its borders.

Kuleba wrote on Twitter "Russia failed to respond to our request under the Vienna Document," adding that Kyiv is now taking the next step, which is a request for a meeting.

Kuleba made a similar request on Friday but got no response from Russia.

The presence of almost 100,000 Russian troops at Ukraine's border has fueled worries of an invasion, with the United States warning on Friday that one might occur "at any time." Russia has denied any intention of invading, instead claiming that its forces are conducting military drills.

Ukraine's eastern territories have been besieged by violence since March 2014, following Russia's invasion and takeover of Crimea.

Russia has also accused Western nations of compromising its security by expanding NATO to its borders.

The Kremlin has issued a number of security demands to the West, including the withdrawal of troops from several ex-Soviet states and assurances that Ukraine and Georgia would not join NATO.
