United Nations: The Summit of the Future’s Action Days in New York has brought world leaders, diplomats, and civil society and youth representatives together to confront the pressing challenges of today’s global landscape. The focus of Action Day 2, held on September 21, was on building a multilateral system that is more inclusive, representative, and effective in tackling the complexities of the modern world.
In his opening remarks, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the need for transformative reforms, particularly in global governance structures. “We need multilateralism that is more inclusive, more effective, and more networked – with stronger links between international institutions and with the people,” Guterres said, underscoring the importance of giving a stronger voice to developing countries.
Guterres also called for greater involvement from all segments of society, including civil society and youth, who are seen as critical actors in driving change, promoting accountability, and using new technologies to create a better future. “We will not solve today’s global problems without contributions from all of society,” Guterres said, highlighting the need for collective action to address issues like climate change, inequality, and conflict.
The summit’s flagship outcome, the "Pact for the Future," is expected to lay the groundwork for substantial reform. Key areas of focus include reforming the United Nations Security Council to make it more representative of today's global dynamics, overhauling international financial institutions to better support sustainable development, and addressing gaps in the governance of outer space and global crises.
Jamaican President Andrew Holness also took the stage, stressing the urgency of translating the summit’s ambitions into action. “We have an obligation to protect the interests of future generations and ensure that they will inherit a planet in which they can thrive,” Holness said, calling for immediate steps to bring the summit's declaration to life.
The Action Days, which coincide with the International Day of Peace, are designed to pave the way for a more responsive and networked multilateralism. The discussions have revolved around creating partnerships and engaging a broad spectrum of stakeholders, from governments and international organizations to civil society, youth, and private sector leaders.
As the summit progresses, it is clear that the United Nations is positioning itself at the forefront of a necessary transformation, one that aims to deliver solutions for peace, security, and sustainable development in a rapidly changing world.
