Washington, D.C.: CIA Director Bill Burns recently presented the prestigious "George Tenet" medal to Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Khulaifi, the head of the Qatari State Security Agency. This recognition, awarded earlier this week at CIA headquarters, highlights the deepening intelligence cooperation between the United States and Qatar, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The ceremony occurred during a critical period of heightened diplomatic activity, as the U.S. and Qatar intensify efforts to secure a hostage release and a ceasefire deal concerning Gaza. The award underscores the strategic roles played by both Burns and Al-Khulaifi in these high-stakes negotiations.

The primary motivation behind the award was Qatar's substantial contributions toward securing the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. Sources indicated that Burns' recognition of Al-Khulaifi was a gesture of appreciation for his pivotal role in bolstering national and regional security, as well as his exceptional support to the CIA in safeguarding U.S. and Qatari interests.

Moreover, the medal also acknowledges the successful collaboration between CIA and Qatari intelligence in counterterrorism efforts. The Qatari State Security Agency's efforts in thwarting and mitigating threats in the Middle East were deemed significant in the award decision.

The CIA has declined to comment on the details of the award or the ongoing negotiations.
